Empaths are highly sensitive individuals when it comes to emotions. Because they are spiritually attuned, they possess the ability to take on other people’s emotions as theirs. They are so kind and loving and find it difficult to say ‘no’ to a person in need, but while this may make them fantastic friends, it can be a huge challenge on the empaths themselves [1]. One common challenge most empaths face is adrenal fatigue.

Adrenal fatigue
When the body experiences stress, the adrenal glands release hormones to lessen the anxiety, and for empaths who are saddled with the emotions of others as well as theirs, the hormonal release is even higher. Because empaths are emotional sponges that take on the emotions of so many people, they are more vulnerable to adrenal fatigue [2].

Luckily, Dr. Orloff, M.D, offers several recommendations for empaths to help reduce exhaustion and fatigue:

Self Care
Empaths need to realize their energy is not limitless. Meditation, mental shield, and personal boundaries will go a long way in shielding them from adrenal fatigue.

Create Boundaries
Dr. Orloff emphasized on the need for empaths to create boundaries especially “Eliminate the energy vampires in your life or at least set clear limits and boundaries with them so they don’t chronically sap you, ” Orloff stresses.

To protect their personal space, empaths need to control the amount of time they spend with stressful people.

Positive Thinking is Key
To keep exhaustion at bay, Dr. Orloff stresses the importance of practicing positive thinking. “You might not have control over some stresses in your life, but you can have control of your attitude to relieve adrenal fatigue. You can remove a great deal of inner stress by surrendering patterns of self-loathing and embracing self-compassion and self-love!” she said.

More on Adrenal Failure
