This is one unique story of intrigue and love – most couples open their wedding gifts the day after or a week tops after their wedding day. For this particular gift, this couple had to wait nine years to open.

Kathy and Brandon Gunn are the couples in this story and they had an unusual experience when it came to opening a particular gift.

A Symbolic Gift

Kathy’s aunt, Allison was one of the many well-wishers who gave the couple gifts on their wedding day but hers was special. How? It came with a note that read “do not open until the first disagreement”.

So if it took them nine years to open the gift, it means they didn’t have a disagreement for nine years. But this is not exactly how it happened.

Like every normal couple, they have had quarrels, disagreements as well as fights that looked like the end, but they decided against opening the box. Kathy gave a reason for this saying, “There had obviously been plenty of disagreements, arguments and slammed doors throughout our 9 years. There were even a couple of instances where we both considered giving up… but we never opened the box.

She continued, “I honestly think that we both avoided turning to the box because it would have symbolized our failure. To us, it would have meant that we didn’t have what it takes to make our marriage work – and we’re both too stubborn and determined for that. So, it forced us to reassess situations. Was it really time to open the box? What if this isn’t our worst fight? What if there’s a worse one ahead of us and we don’t have our box?!? As my Great Uncle Bill would say, ‘nothing is ever so bad that it couldn’t get worse.’”

And this kept them going.

The Moment They Opened the Gift

Ironically, the moment the couple chose to open the gift was not a disagreement. While preparing for the wedding of one of their friends, they reminisced about theirs. That feeling of nostalgia led them to think about their gifts, especially the ones they have fallen in love with over the years. All of a sudden, they came into a realization.

The most symbolic gift of their marriage was still unopened!

All of these years they have decided against opening the gift for fear of losing the best opportunity to open it. That night, they realized it was time.

The Gift

There it was in the box – two notes for the couple, and some cash. The note addressed to Kathy said, “Go get a pizza, shrimp, or something you both like” while Brandon’s read: “Go get flowers and a bottle of wine.”

There were other things in the box – two wine glasses, a flower vase, bath soap, lotion, and bubbles – this was basically a care package to help rekindle their flame. How thoughtful.

It was the message behind the gift that really struck a chord with the couple. Kathy’s words best describe the feeling, “All along, we assumed that the contents of that box held the key to saving a marriage – an age-old trick – unbeknownst to us rookies. After all, my Great Aunt and Uncle had been married for nearly half a century. So, we thought the box would save ‘us’ – and in a way it did.”

There are lots of takeaways from the story for both the couple and readers. The gift itself helped teach the couple patience [1] and understanding beyond the face value. Readers can learn from the resilience of the couple.

The gift might have helped to do better in their marriage but it was all them. There always had it in them to fight [2] for their marriage – the gift was just a catalyst.
