Can I also give up my T.V for an additional $1K? It’s ironical that a company that sells internet and TV bundles is putting up this challenge, and it’s fantastic too!
Smartphones and social media are two major contributing factors to chronic unproductivity around the globe. We lose sleep, forget to eat, don’t get much work done or connect with the important things because our virtual lives are slowly becoming our realities.
According to a 2016 survey by Deloitte Global Mobile, 88% of the respondents admitted to checking their phones within 30 minutes of waking up. 61% check within five minutes of waking up. I’m guilty of this one. If we invest all the hours we spend on our smartphones every day into innovative and creative tasks, the world would be full of billionaires by now (okay this is a stretch, but you get the point).
168 hours without checking your Instagram feed or WhatsApp messages?
Easier said than done. Frontier Bundles is a Utah-based authorized reseller of packages from Frontier, an American telecommunications company. They provide phone services, internet, and TV bundles.
With the 30th anniversary of the Motorola MicroTac (first flip phone) coming up this year, Frontier has decided to launch a challenge in honor of the telecoms giant . One lucky winner is going to cart away a grand prize of $1,000 for being able to abstain from their smartphones for an entire week, exactly 168 hours. They are going to choose one person who would travel back in time to 1989 when the MciroTac was first released.
The chosen applicant would use a flip phone for an entire week, and the company aims to obtain information about real-life differences in technological generations. They will be running an evaluation to understand how smartphones have affected daily lives and productivity over the past few decades.
Frontier Bundles will track the amount of time the participant uses to perform regular smartphones tasks on the ancient flip phone, such as texting and emailing. The participant will take note of any changes in their sleep and work patterns, also putting down the number of times they wished they could Google something and end up asking a friend or the dictionary instead. They’ll give an honest overall review of their experience at the end.
Was it refreshing and re-energizing to be away from your smartphone? Or was it a hell-on-earth experience they couldn’t wait to be done with?
How can you be chosen?
Firstly, you have to be a total smart-phone freak, a social media addict or a tech geek. The type of person who can’t go one hour without touching their smartphone or a tech gadget and logging into social media hubs. You’ll have to prove that you are a technology maverick who is deeply in love with smartphones and tech gadgets and is up to date on the latest releases and tech news.
No degrees or professional certificates are required for this challenge. All applicants must be over the age of 18. Application is strictly for only citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
You have higher chances of getting selected if you have a very active life on social media (so something could come out of uploading a 100 selfies every day). Your Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Twitters, and Reddit accounts should be bustling with activity to increase your chances.
What does the winner get?
- A cash prize of $1,000
- A survival kit that contains:
– A real map to replace the GPS on their smartphones
– A pocket phonebook (This is really serious).
– A notepad and a pen to replace their digital to-do lists
– A couple of CDs from the ’90s
- A chance to reconnect with the past.
How to apply?
Click Here to log onto the Frontier Bundles website and fill out an application form.
You’ll be asked to fill in your personal details, information about your current phone, and your level of social media addiction (which should be really high). You’ll have to write a 200-word pitch on why you’re the most suitable person for the challenge. A field for a video submission link is available but optional.
On July 8, the winner would be announced to commence his or her 168 hours of smartphone-less experience. Good luck to all applicants!
