Actors sometimes have to go to extreme lengths with altering their lifestyles to get into the desired shape for a movie role. A professional actor has no problem piling up on all the carbs in the world to put on some flesh, and will equally not bat an eyelid when it’s time to shed it all again. Let’s face it – acting is demanding.

Anne Hathaway was all business when she took up a vegan diet plan to get in shape for her role as Fantine, the orphan girl in Les Miserables. She lost 25 pounds in three weeks. As reported by People, the actress who broke out as Mia Thermopolis in Princess Diaries said the idea had been to alter her figure to look “near-death” [1].

“I had to be obsessive about it,” she said. “The idea was to look near death. Looking back on the whole experience – and I don’t judge it in any way – it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway.”

Hathaway paid solidarity to her fellow vegans all over the world when at her wedding in 2012, she made provisions for a healthy vegan buffet.

Embarrassed by her too-slim figure

When Hathaway was getting ready for the role of Brand in Interstellar (2014), she admits she felt awkward and insecure because she had to wear a baggy spacesuit over the too-thin frame.

“I just didn’t feel good or healthy,” she said to Harper’s Bazaar [2].

The same year, while shooting Interstellar in Iceland, a taste of awesome fish caused her to change her mind and make a swift U-turn back to her meat-inclusive diet. Speaking to Tatler, she said a dinner date with her husband and costar Matt Damon brought her back into the carnivorous circle [3].

When it was time to order at the Michelin-star restaurant, Matt said he’d have whatever the waiter wanted to serve him, and Hathaway didn’t know how to bring up her vegan diet requirements in that awkward situation.

 “So then I was the only chick and I’m the vegan and everyone’s just going with the flow,” she said. “So I asked [she puts on a small embarrassed voice]: ‘Is your fish local?’ And they said: ‘Do you see that fjord?’ So I had a piece of salmon and my brain felt like a computer rebooting.”

Since then, she’s gone back to her former diet, and she’s been feeling better ever since. Her sudden shift isn’t a negative evaluation of the vegan diet. It was merely a reflection of her own personal needs. What works for vegans probably couldn’t work for her. Some people live their best lives on a healthy vegan diet and others don’t really connect with the idea of going exclusively green, no matter how awesomely healthy it may be. It’s purely individual.

Weight gain in 2018

Hathaway sparked pregnancy rumors with the significant weight she put on in 2018. She was quick to quell the rumors by letting her Instagram followers know that she was on a high-carb diet to gain weight for a new movie role. She was fully aware of the fact that online trolls would waste no time in fat-shaming her.

“I am gaining weight for a movie role and it is going well,” she said in a caption. “To all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it’s not me, it’s you. Peace xx.”

“It sounds kind of sad to say; I just wanted to enjoy my summer and let everyone know that I’m living in my body and I’m happy with my body, and if my body is different than what you’re used to, or what you think it should be, that’s [your experience]. My experience is mine, and I’m loving it,” she told Hoda Ktob.
